Devils Bathtub

Kristine and I wanted to get a quick overnight backpacking trip in with our dog Nala for the year. Since I had hiked by the beautiful Devil's Bathtub lake the previous year while trying to hike Graveyard Peak, I figured it would be an excellent outing for the three of us.

The trail leaves out of the end of the Lake Edison road above the Vermilion Valley Resort. It is 4 miles each way with and elevation gain of 1,300'.

Wednesday July 20th 2011:
It took us over 3 hours to reach the trail head which is the same parking lot as the Mono Pass trail on the far side of Lake Edison.

By 12:30 we were hiking down to the trail fending off mosquitoes. I should had figured that mid July during a wet year was asking for trouble! The trail gradually hikes uphill until it crosses an area known as Twin Meadows. There are several creek crossing below Twin Meadows which can be walked across on logs. Unfortunately, Nala apparently didn't know how to swim across. So I had to take my shoes off and "assist" her across the creek. The mosquitoes intensity kept increasing....

The turn after two miles reaches the turnoff to either Devils Bathtub or counting on to Graveyard Meadow. The last two miles climbs up in to the bowl where Devils Bathtub is and again the mosquitoes continued to get worse.
By 4 PM all 3 of us arrived at the outlet of the lake. Nice campsites are located of the east side of the creek outlet along the shore.

We spent the afternoon building our fire and cooking brats for dinner. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes really put a damper on the festivities. None the less, we all enjoyed our time. The following morning we packed it all up and did the 4 miles hike back out to the trail head.
